Keyboard Mechanism

Overview.

This project presents an infographic video elucidating the mechanisms of mechanical keyboards and their switches. As an enthusiast of customized mechanical keyboards, I drew inspiration and references from my own tailor-made keyboard. Additionally, this project marked my initial endeavor into Blender, rendering in Cycles with geometry nodes. The entire process was an immense learning experience.

Concept.

In order to provide a comprehensive understanding of a mechanical keyboard's structure, I chose a hierarchical, part-to-whole structure for presenting information. Initially, I introduced the overall structure, then moved to discuss the basic elements, starting with the keyboard switches. The narrative then progresses to cover the details of the PCB board and keyboard layout.

Results.

For a precise depiction of the keyboard structure, I turned to my own keyboard, disassembling it for a hands-on reference and modeling. I further dismantled more than twenty keyboard switches to gain insights into their activation mechanisms. My personal favorite keycap combination influenced the chosen color scheme for the keyboard design.
